Pump Setup & Troubleshooting
Setting up your fountain
- Rinse the bowl, the pump and a new filter under running water. Do not use soap.
- Seat the filter in its holder until it sits flat. A filter at an angle lets water bypass it.
- Drop the pump into the well at the bottom of the bowl and press it down so the suction cups grip.
- Fill with cool tap water up to the MAX line. The pump must be fully submerged or it will run dry and hum.
- Plug in. The flow starts within a few seconds. Wireless models need about 4 hours for a first full charge.
The pump is humming or rattling
Almost always one of three things:
- Water too low. Top up to the MAX line. This is the cause nine times out of ten.
- Air trapped in the pump. Unplug, lift the pump out, tilt it under water to release the bubble, put it back.
- Debris in the impeller. Open the pump cover, rinse the little rotor, click it back together.
Water flows weakly or not at all
A clogged filter is the usual culprit. If the filter is more than four weeks old, replace it. If it is fresh, check that the outlet on top is not blocked and that the pump cable is not kinked under the bowl.
Cleaning schedule
- Weekly: refresh the water and rinse the bowl.
- Every 2 to 4 weeks: new filter, depending on how many pets drink from it.
- Monthly: full clean. The stainless steel bowl is dishwasher safe; rinse the pump by hand.
